Wine Making Notes

A mild growing season associated with moderate crop led to slow and even ripening during harvest 2022, preserving good acidity and balance while intensifying varietal characters across all the white and early red varieties.

Our 2022 Tempranillo is sourced from a single vineyard, planted over 20 years ago on its own roots and cared for since by a family dedicated to producing the best fruit in the most traditional ways. Almost everything is done by hand throughout the season by the owners, their friends and family. The result is pristine fruit, showcasing the best Tempranillo Margaret River has to offer and the ideal conditions of the vintage. This batch was handpicked on 29/3/2022, a hot and sunny fall day. The oldest hand picker in the team was 84 years old and said, surrounded by honeybees eager to taste the sweet fruit, there was nothing she’d rather do that day than pick the best of Margaret River!

On arrival at the winery, the fruit was immediately chilled and sent to its fermenter for a short cold soaking. The fermentation work was traditional with daily pump-overs and rack-and-returns to enhance extraction. After a few days of warm extended maceration, the fruit was pressed and the wine started its aging with oak, a mix of French and American, of which about 25-30% new. In January 2023, the wine was racked and prepared for bottling, without fining to preserve all its original fruit characters.

Nose

The nose is first spicy- cracked peppercorn, juniper, allspice berry- and intensely fruity with notes of red liquorice and cherry, a mix of delicate blue fruit and ripe forest fruit.

Palate

The palate attack is juicy and intensely fruity. The red fruit acidity leads into a savoury palate of blood orange, English marmalade. A serious backbone of black but fine silky tannins and toasted oak leads to the long vanilla caramel finish.

Food Pairing

Simply seasoned grilled beef and some charred vegetables, finished with a warm chocolate fondant to round out a perfect meal.

Allergens

Sulphites.
